Bird News Friday 24th December

Thanks to Geoff Campbell for these sightings from today and some great photos as usual - Christmas has come early for us, thanks Geoff!

20 Waxwings were in Ballyvoy (photographs), another 10 in Ballycastle and a Merlin over Ballycastle. Also one of the Goldfinch at my feeding station. A field just outside Coleraine has a minimum of 600 Skylark, also Yellowhammer, Tree Sparrow, Snow Bunting, Reed Bunting and at least one Brambling.





In Co. Armagh 30 Brambling, 35 Tree Sparrow and 3 Yellowhammer were in a private garden at Richill (Andrew Poots)

Killard point - at least 10 Woodcock, 50 Snipe (they were everywhere), 100s Skylarks, 4 Yellowhammer, 1 Merlin, 1 Grey Plover, 10s of Redwing. Portaferry - 1 woodcock at edge of A20 just N of town. At Kilclief - 1 Little Egret flew by, 1 Greenshank. At Islands Park, Newcastle - 1 female Brambling, 10s of redwing, 5 Lesser Redpoll (all Keith Bennett)
 
In Killough 6 Brambling (3 of them male) and a Meadow Pipit were in a private garden in Killough.

 
3 Brambling were in a garden in Waterloo Park in Belfast and a Meadow Pipit along the North Circular Road 

 
A male Brambling was in a garden near the sports field at Lagan Valley Country Park.

 
A Snipe was at the Shimna Bridge in Newcastle and another in a field beside the east edge of Tollymore Forest Park.
 
40 Snipe were feeding on roadside verges and fields between Carnfunnock and Drumnagreagh hotel, Co. Antrim today.

13 Black guillemots displaying





2 Coots were on the seaward side of the weir



as well as 3 Little grebe, 7 Mute swans, 2 Mallard all within 40m either side of the weir


Bridge-end Train stop had good numbers of Fieldfare, Redwing and Blackbirds and 3 Bullfinches flitting around.

A Little Egret flew over moat park, Dundonald.

3 Little Egret were at the Floodgates in Newtonards.
 
A mystery is developing at Dundrum Inner Bay South - now Harry the Egret has turned up but there's no sign of Larry or Barry. Also present were 12 Goldeneye, 8 Little Grebe, 4 Greenshank and 2 adult Whooper Swan.

A private garden at Ardilea, Dundrum, had 52 Blackbird, 18 Fieldfare, 12 Redwing, 6 Song Thrush and 4 Mistle Thrush...until a Sparrowhawk spooked everything, so there might be one less of one of the above. The Ardilea River had a drake Tufted Duck.

Another private garden at Ardilea had 20 Yellowhammer and a Treecreeper.

29 Golden Plover and a Grey Plover were at Tyrella.

Newcastle Rock Pool had 300 Redshank, 74 Turnstone and 11 Purple Sandpiper - 2 Teal were offshore.

I now have 3 Fieldfares and 6 Redwing in my garden.

10 Waxwing were at Tesco car park, Yorkgate, Belfast (Nathalie Donnelly)

Tunisia Update:
'Gale force winds and sandstorm yesterday, went down to Libya border today - 1 first-winter Great Black-headed Gull, 2000 Slender-billed Gulls, 35 Caspian Tern, 5 Black Wheatear, 3 Moussier's Redstart, 5 House Bunting, 30 Rock Sparrow, Lanner. Also cheesburger with a well-known type of blue-veined cheese on it.'
