Bird News Sunday 19th December

In Co. Antrim 30 Waxwings and a Brambling were at Ballycastle (Geoff Campbell)

A Ferruginous Duck was at the mouth of the Closet River

A Short-eared Owl was at Killard Point. 4 Woodcock, 25 Snipe, 3 Brambling, 3 Yellowhammer and a Merlin were also present. The redhead Smew was still at the Quoile pondage


About 70 Waxwing were along the Whitewell Road, Belfast, another 29 Waxwing were at Ballynure Co.Antrim

Around Belfast Lough a Kingfisher was at Whitehouse Lagoon and a female Blackcap was feeding on Buckthorn at Macedon Point. Over 500 Scaup and 100 Tufted Duck were at Dargan Bay (Keith bennett)

5 Brambling, 5 Fieldfare, 15 Redwing and 30 Lesser Redpoll  were at Dunmurry.

A male Blackcap was still at a garden in Newcastle another male Blackcap was at Scarva, a Kingfisher was at the canal

A Sparrowhawk was in a garden in Bangor

A male Brambling was at Islands Park, Newcastle, 44 Redwing and 2 Fieldfare were also present.

At Dundrum Inner Bay South there were 15 Snipe and 4 Goldeneye. 150 Dunlin and 35 Ringed Plover were at Dundrum Harbour.

At Green Island there were 900 Dunlin, 100 Knot, 7 Bar-tailed Godwit, 1 Black-tailed Godwit and 26 Grey Plover. A Whooper Swan was also present

A Greenshank was on the Ardilea River and a Snipe was in the middle of the Ardilea Road

3 Snipe, 4 Lapwings, 6 Fieldfare and 4 Redwing were at Ardarragh, Rathfriland (Shelagh Henry)


The American Robin was stilL near Inishcrone, Co. Sligo

There wasn't a lot of birds in my garden today - there's usually about 15 Blackbirds and 30-40 House Sparrows...they were all scared off by this brute throwing his weight around!!





.... and just in case you were wondering the 19th of December in yesteryear had:
  • 5 Wheatear on Mew Island, Copeland Islands (1930) 
  • 2 Spotted Redshank at the Quoile Estuary (1964)
  • A Ring-billed Gull at Lurgan Park Lake (1986). Present into 1987.

Late News from Yesterday: 5 Brambling were at Derry City

Really Really Late News!!
A Barn Owl was seen last Sunday night at around 8pm in the townland of Ardarragh, Rathfriland.
