Bird News Tuesday 31st May

Whooper Swans by Ian Dickey (knew this would come in handy sometime)

Whooper Swans are one of our rarest breeding birds but we have recieved confirmation that they have successfully bred again in Northern Ireland this year. One pair raised 6 chicks and at the same location there is another possible two pairs nesting. Locality witheld. This one at Dundrum Inner Bay South certainly isn't gonna breed, there's a distinct lack of testosterone going on with this bird, it just mopes about the place......

......which is fine as what I'm worried about is if this fag machine standing at Dundrum Inner Bay North finds a mate and starts breeding.....actually that would be quite good, if I caught them I could have a permanent supply of free range cigarettes

Our sources also say that contary to Information already broadcast there is at least, 10 possibly 11 Red Kite pairs breeding this year in Northern Ireland.

In Co. Armagh:
A Cuckoo, 2 Buzzard and a Sparrowhawk were at Peatlands Park (David Nixon)

In Co. Antrim:
A Cuckoo and 30 Tree Sparrow were at Portmore Lough RSPB

In County Londonderry
2 Avocets were seen last night at the Roe Estuary, Lough Foyle

Gannet Attack!!

Well, maybe if you're a fish, which reminds me I must try and organise that way to kill Derk (sticking a mackeral on top of his head and floating him out to sea). Is this our most common non-breeding visitor?........no, whoever thinks that is stupid.

Thanks to Stuart Broadley for these shots!!

Pomarine Skua

Ian Dickey is no Lionel Messi and wasn't even on the bench for the Champions League Finals. But Ian says he would have substituted Chipolata the Little Mexican at half time and Ryan Giggs soon after. He would also have instructed any Untited player to try and make a tackle (at any point would have been nice)
But unlike Messi, Ian is handy with a camera and took these couple of crackers on Sunday. Pomarine Skua is a rare autumn migrant and even rarer in spring. Some birders (like me) have never seen a spring Pomarine Skua in Northern Ireland and even rarer is someone getting a photograph of one. Im not jealous at all

Thanks Ian

Co.Armagh Photos

Some brilliant photos from Neil McCartney from Co.Armagh. The first one shows the Michael Jordan of the Hirundine World just after scoring the winning Basket In the Swallow Basketball World Championship!

This little fella looks like he is three sheets to the wind although tests have shown Blue Tits don't like Buckfast (not even ones from Lurgan!)

A cracking photo of a juvenile Willow Warbler or Chiffchaff, i don't know to be honest! Any International experts on juvenile warblers please let us know!

Thanks Neil!

Lough Beg Citrine Wagtail

Sorry another little fib. The title was only an excuse to get more Turkey photos in but they are worth seeing! These are definately the last ones, honest Indian. A Citrine Wagtail has occured at Lough Beg so that is as good a link as you will see on this blog!

Ring Necked Duck photos (part2)

Some more shockingly bad photos of the Lough Money Ring Necked Duck. We were not going to post them because they are so awful but they were sent in by Lionel Messi and we thought what the hell we might as well let everyone see how bad Lionel is with the camera. Stick to the day job mate.

Spotted Flycatcher

Many thanks to Sam Wylie from Dungannon for these great photos of a Spotted Flycatcher which has taken up residence in his garden.

Whats going on?

More disturbing news from the RSPB Reserve in Belfast. In recent weeks we have heard of the place being taken over by Black Headed Gulls, Grass 50 foot high, ten foot tall foxes eating visitors and now we have a Physcopath Hare who goes round eating just one ear of all the other Hares. But the good news is the Pantymime Horse starts his first shift today so the place will be ship shape by this time tomorrow.
Thanks To Pat Baines for this great photo.

Last 4 Turkey Pictures

Well folks this is it the final 4 Turkey pictures, it will be sad but what can we do.
