Bird News Wednesday 29th February

Thanks to the exile Ian Dickey for this photo of some Stranraer seagulls!

In Co.Down: The 2ndw Ring Billed Gull was at Groomsport. (Andrew Rafferty)
An adult Meditterean Gull was also seen

The odd Goose at Killough (now upgraded by the Nobirders to a Grey Bellied!!) was still present. What would a Black Brant x Pale Bellied hybrid look like??

In Co.Antrim: 4 Long Tailed Duck (3 males and a female) were off Fishermans Quay Carrickfergus

The 2 first winter Iceland Gulls were at McConnells Weir. Seen from a moveing train, we suspect the Chef was in First Class quaffing champers!! (Chef Vealz)

A fenale Goosander and adult Meditterean Gull were seen at Glynn (Also the Chef!!)

Yellow Bouy

We havent featured a Yellow Bouy on the blog before but this is a particularly nice one i have to admit! Any excuse to get 9 pictures of an adult Kumliens on the Blog!

Postcard From Killybegs

Evening

I managed to get away from the gulls for the weekend (forgive me Derek for I have sinned, please please please forgive me) and spotted these wee beauties in the garden of the cottage we rented near Killybegs. Also had a crossbill in the tree tops briefly so garden list was pretty impressive at 3 siskin, 2 redpolls, a crossbill , goldcrests, greenfinch, bullfinch a jay, to many chaffinches, coal/blue and great tits, 2 hares (brave with the 3 dogs watching out the patio window) and a few ravens and a buzzard in the back field and woodcock/peasants flushed in the woodland beside the cottage. mountcharles had great northern divers, great crested grebe, red-breasted mergansers, common scoters and I wasn't allowed to go to killybegs to look at the gulls as her indoors does't like them :-(

We want to quit

Nothing would give Andrew and myself more pleasure that to doff our caps at the Nobirders and quit. That would be because they had got their act together and show everyday what Northern Ireland has to offer birdwise (with a bit of hunour thrown in) When that situation occurs Andrew and myself will quit and even give the Nobirders our support, However we are not holding our breath as these results show. You have to remember that the Nobirders have "upped" their game but here are the totals of photographs that they have put on in January AND February COMBINED against our total JUST for February

They're all turning their backs on me now - Stephen Maxwell's at it again, he's almost as bad as that Traitor Bob Shaw. Well, Bob just count yourself lucky you know my big secret otherwise I'd tell everybody your big secret. So there. Traitor.

"Time to swap the blue-mouldy reduced bread bought in Asda on a Wednesday night for a real tasty snack perfectly sized to throw onto the sea wall at groomsport"

Poor Ian

Ian Dickey is still in Exile but we are comeing round to thinking its a good thing as the photos he is sending us are brilliant!! Its just a pity Stranraer (where Ian is heideing out) is awful for gulls. Its awful for everything apart from getting your face rearranged on a Saturday Night. Thanks Ian for bringing a bit of colour to this thing!

More From O'Callaghan

We (sorry I) just cant resist photos of adult Kumliens Gulls and the Mad O'Callaghan has sent us these pictures of an adult from Killybegs. Donegal will of course be included in our new NIBirding Bird Report! The count down has begun!! Could be a long countdown however especially if we take a leaf out of the Nobirders Book!

Glonks

Come on who doeant like Glaucous Gulls. Andrews wife once told me that Andrew tried to but one online on EBay because he reckoned a chicken x glaucous hybrid would be pretty cool, imagine a chook with a big pink bill!

2ndw Kumliens Gull

I havent seen a second winter Kumliens Gull this winter which is kind of mad!! This is the closest thing to one ive seen, its a dirty old hybrid, presumeably from those randy Herring and Glaucous Gulls up in Iceland! Still its better than a moth!
